5 Steps to Get Rid of Cellulite

Cellulite is an unaesthetic skin condition that many women have to struggle with. These unwanted fat deposits under the skin tissue appear as an amalgam of small bumps or “orange peel”, especially on the thighs, buttocks, abdomen and arms. While cellulite is basically the appearance of the fat layer under the skin, it is actually caused by the structural conformation of the connective tissue that is supposed to hold the fat layers in place. In most cases, cellulite usually appears on body areas where the circulation is decreased. Factors like reduced physical activity, sedentary lifestyles, heredity, nutritional deficiencies and poor skincare can all contribute to the formation of cellulite. The reason why only women seem to have it while most men don’t is because men’s skin in the same areas is thicker while their upper fat cell layer is thinner and has a different anatomy.

To combat cellulite, a comprehensive approach to treating the causes and the symptoms is best. Here are a few things you can do:

  1. Exercise. The truth is that exercise is still the best solution to combat cellulite. Exercising, stretching and being active while cutting down on sitting time not only help improve your general health and tonus, they also contribute to diminishing the fatty tissue, increasing circulation, and helping build a stronger, more toned muscle mass that will eventually improve the look of cellulite.
  2. Massage. Massaging the cellulite-affected areas, dry brushing, alternative showers (cold and warm) are all very helpful in increasing blood and lymph circulation and consequently helping the skin build stronger connective tissue.
  3. Take care of your skin. As cellulite is mostly a skin problem, not a fat problem (even the slender people have it!) it is advised that you start caring for your skin intensively. Apart from the exercise and massage, which help drive nutrients to the skin from the inside, you can also help by applying hydrating lotions on your skin daily. Using a special anti-cellulite cream with active ingredients will help deliver nutrients to your skin and maximize the effects of the hydrators.
  4. Eat well. A balanced diet is key to optimal health and beautiful skin. Dr. Murad suggests a combination of food and supplements that provide essential nutrients that help repair the cells and the connective tissue, which in turn can push the fat cells back in place. The best nutrients to help you strengthen the connective tissue and build more collagen are foods rich in aminoacids like eggs, beans, seeds, cold water fish, along with a supplement of Glucosamine.
  5. Minimize stress. Stress damages the cells that are supposed to produce collagen as well as those which are needed to maintain your skin’s barrier function. Minimizing stress with an active pastime is like a 2-in-1 cellulite buster!
